What do all these things have in common?
They are all concepts and activities that we encourage and make use of in the business world.
We do all these things to insure the success of our businesses. We do them to help us grow and improve our businesses and our specific departmental goals. We use tools to analyze risks and mitigate those risks.
We use these strategies and goal setting tools to help us dream bigger and achieve more.
Now, let’s list the tools that couples regularly use to grow their relationship, to insure their lasting health and have the kind of long-term health and stability that we all want.
For sure there are tools for couples but there is such a discrepancy between what is just normal common and best practice for business people and what we just normally use for our intimate relationships.
Couples’ Coaching creates an opportunity to focus just as strategically on your relationship as you might do at work, setting goals or dreaming big for the next few years.
Each program is different and comes in a wide variety of formats. Let’s look at some elements offered though:
- Complete personality or behavior style assessments to understand your individual strengths and how they compliment each other. Coaches can help facilitate the conversation between you and your partner helping you remove misunderstandings and appreciate your communication tendencies and preferences. This allows you to maximize each others’ unique perspectives and insights.
- Learn about conflict styles and understand your tendencies as individuals and as a couple. How could your difficult conversations be better? Are there passive-aggressive patterns that could be improved? How can you hear each other more effectively during emotionally-heightened conversations?
- Strategic questions about how you will make decisions as a couple - decisions about spending, saving, vacations, extended family, child-rearing, etc. A trained coach can ask tough questions and help couples find their way to very effective ways of working, living and parenting together.
These are just a few examples. The job of a coach, be that in a group setting or one-on-one is to support growth and development. This is not through teaching or advice giving or training but through creating an environment where it is safe to dream, increase self-awareness, and brainstorm. The coach partners with the client in “a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential” (as defined by the International Coach Federation).
